I wanted to wish you good tidings this year, mate. I recently read the Surfer mag article about your '09 title race and I know they play on the drama to sell the rag but your run had the full attention of many who simply appreciate your abilities without worry about if you actually pull a title or not. I don't feel that is the most important part of your life (although it would be a crowning achievement).

The fact that you live your life in the spotlight is something we often forget. Your life and the life of your family (in many ways) is put on display. However, this past year you showed the utmost in courage, respect for your friends and gentlemanly attitude. Few other athletes can boast such an effort (in a peak and valley year, no less). I can think of a small faction of people who even care about anything other than getting their way, regardless the consequence. You have showed character and patience. Our surfing forefathers would have wanted it that way. You have made them proud. It is a refreshing change after years of antics we have seen at the supposed "Professional" level of surfing in the last decade. Your run made the '09 ASP year worth watching. You made us cheer, got our hearts to race and even had us feel your pain. I imagine you would have never dreamed the impression '09 would make on all of us.

So, this is your time. Your new year to do your best and come what may. Wins and loses will occur but ultimately it is your decision on how to let it effect you and your future performance. I have no doubt you will continue to push the boundaries of professional surfing for the better and my wife and I look forward to following you on your journey. Blessings.

Thank you, Joel.
