J-BAY NUMBERS

Toasting victory in 2009. //Shorty

Stats guru Mike Newman has put together this statistical tribute in lieu of our mate not being in J-Bay this year.

Why do the good guys always get injured? J-Bay this year will be missing one of the greatest surfers ever in the history of the event. Unless you have been sleeping under a Snapper Rocks rock, you would have heard about Joel’s latest misadventure.

Can someone please make a wettie for Parko made of cotton wool? It’s not over for the 2010 season, but will Joel ever have an uninterrupted season and win a title? The three-times runner up has posted records all over the world with highest scores, nine event wins, and phenomenal results at every venue on the tour. His record shows that although he has not yet won a title, he is well inside the top 10 surfers of all time.

The tour is now heading to J-Bay where Joel’s record is incredible…

• In his 11 visits to J-Bay, he is the only surfer in history to make the final 16 every time.
• He won the event on his first visit as a wildcard in 1999, he also won it on his last visit in 2009.
• He has placed 3rd twice in 2002 and 2008, and 5th three times in 2000, 2005 and 2007.
• He’s made the finals in 7 of his 11 starts at the venue, and in his other four starts he has placed 9th each time.
• His win ratio in South Africa is 75% with 37 heat wins from 49 heats.
• He has won 9 of his 11 first round heats at J-Bay.
• He has only had three bad heats from 49 in his 11 starts here [see below]
• He was due to surf in his 50th J-Bay heat in round 1 this year, but that will now have to wait until 2011.
• Joel’s average result in South Africa over 11 seasons has been 5.36th …

Below are his losses at J-Bay…
• In 2009 he won the event undefeated.
• In 2008 he lost in round 1 to Taylor Knox by 1.70 points in the highest ever combined two-man score in J-Bay history. [Knox 19.70 “J-Bay record highest score” to Parko 18.00]
• In 2008 he lost the semi-final to Kelly by just 0.83 points.
• In 2007 he lost the quarters to Taj by just 0.88 points.
• In 2006 he lost in round 4 to Adriano by just 0.33 points.
• In 2005 he lost to Greg Emslie in the quarters by a whopping 5.17 points.
• In 2004 he lost to the Hog in round 4 by 1.63 points.
• In 2003 he lost to Shea Lopez in round 4 by 4.23 points.
• In 2002 he lost in round 1 to Winkler by 3.75 points.
• In 2002 he lost to Mick Lowe on a countback in the semis when scores were tied at 15.75.
• In 2001 he lost in round 4 to Beau Emerton by just 0.65 points.
• In 2000 he lost to Jake Paterson in the quarters by just 1.10 points.
• In 1999 he won the event undefeated.

Apart from his record at J-Bay he holds the record for the highest ever heat totals at four other venues;
• Gold Coast 19.93… semi-final 2009
• Bells Beach 19.50… semi final 2004
• Mundaka 19.70… round 3, 2006
• Pipeline 20.00… round 3, 2008

This guy is a star and will be greatly missed at J-Bay this year…

Wow, his numbers are simply mind blowing, but the first line says he’s made the round of 16 each and every time, and then it says he lost in Round 1 in 2008 and then again in 2002…Anyhow, all the best Parko!!! Trilogy and Free as a Dog are 2 of my fave surf flicks!
