OUR FRIEND CHARLIE

Got some really sad news the other day from Fiji. We found out that Charlie, our good friend on Namotu Island, had passed away. He was a great friend to a lot of the surfers who have been staying on Namotu for the contest over the last 10 years, especially guys like Occ and Louie who have been there from the start, and everyone was really upset when we heard the news.
I remember meeting Charlie the first time I came and stayed on Namotu eight years ago. He was so laidback and friendly, and if ever you asked if you could get a ride out to the reefs in one of the boats Charlie’s answer was always, “No problems, my brother.” The only time you didn’t enjoy your time with Charlie was when he was at the other end of the ping pong table, because he was the island champ and had a forehand smash that you wouldn’t even see. In all the years I’ve been there I never got close to beating him, not once.
Charlie summed up everything great about the island and Fiji itself, and our thoughts go out to his family and all the Namotu family. – Joel
