IMG_7693Mick, well done mate. As kids who would have thought we would be doing this! We always wanted to be surfing on the world tour and here we were today gunning for number 1 place. It’s been an amazing year, and your persistence paid off. So with that said, raise your glasses to Mick Fanning everyone!

Secondly, to all my fans I have met along the way through Twitter, my website and around the world, my friends and family, thanks so much for your amazing support throughout the entire year. This isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning.

See ya in 2010… Parko

Hey Joel it was amazing to watch you all throughout the year. Your performances at the snapper contest and jbay were spectacular. Just a run of bad luck with the ankle injury, but in my opinion you were the best surfer on tour this year. Good luck next year Parko!!

You are a true sportsman, the way you handled that today was pure class, something any parent or coach could show the kids as an example of how to take a hard knock in sport or life. Enjoy a good break now and just do it for fun for a while, 2010 will be something special I am sure.

My heart broke to hear of how close you came to the title and yet so inspired to see how you went up to your best mate (one of) to congratulate him on his win. 2010 is a new year, your year!

You are an awesome guy Joel, I met you earlier in the year and you gave my son and I the time of day and we thought you were amazing for doing so. No one else took time out to have a photo with my boy but you. I was awe struck and bloody nervous and so I forgot your name. Sorry, but it wass so exciting to meet some one you admire or have admierd for so long. You are already a champion in my book.

But reading some of the comments posted on this page has saved me a lot of typing because im just gonna say i agree with all, Especially the guy that said he was heading to the TAB for next year. Ill be right behind him with the house to bet with. Don’t wanna take anything away from Mick, It was a great performance by him but as far as im concerned your THE PEOPLES CHAMP.

Well done on a great year Legend, Thanks for the excitement!!!! Go and smash in a 1000 schooners!!!

Hey Parko, congrats on an amazing year … come the hour, cometh the man! Every surfer admires you more today today than if you’d won that damn jug. Slats has a bag of ‘dem silver goblets but even The Champ wasn’t able to display such epic sportsmanship as you did today. No question you’re one of the giants of the sport and a heroic human to boot.

People love to see a fella get what he deserves, which is why we’re all bleeding for ya. But hey, life ain’t always like that. The way you’ve found balance in life and exude gratitude for your good fortune through every pore is an inspiration to all. Take a look at Tiger this week and tell us who you’d rather be … an awesome guy, with a perfect life, wife, mates and a great family. Or a greedy champion who just wants MORE MORE MORE with every win.

You’re a scholar and a gent Parko. And even though you didn’t get what you deserved today, you really fricken shone.

And hey, to cap the killer year off … we all know you were the best surfer in the world when the waves were smokin’. Well done and don’t forget to celebrate coming second on the ASP tour for ’09. Not a bad achievement kiddo!

Hope you have as much fun and as many good waves in 2010 as you did in ’09.

Nath says:

December 14, 2009 at 3:56 am

Parko, watching you handle yourself at Pipe yesterday was more inspirational than watching you win a flamin’ title. Class act, as always. Even Slats and AI were takin’ a quiet leaf out of your book on how to react when the cards fall against you. You didn’t get the set you deserved but hey, you’ve still got the biggest grin on the planet and for good reason brah.

Great sportspeople transcend their game and show us what it is to be an excellent person. Like how to shrug it off and count your lucky stars when the chips are down. Kelly and Mob doing hi-fives at Pipe was nuthin on your genuine show of mateship and goodvibes. Keep rippin, as everyone knows, you’re the peeps’ champion in 2009.

David Sica says:

December 14, 2009 at 5:58 am

Parko the Great ! Surfing is number and points for ASP but for us Parko fans, surfing is style and you are the greatest. Style in and out of the water. The title was yours but someone up in the sky forced you to go dipper and show your virtue on dealing with difficult issues as being humble. And you did great and showed the world that this kind of style nobody can learn. Either you have it or not. Many surfers can get the worldtitle with one or two great manouvers that turns out in good points but your manouvers speak ! Parko, your surf speaks louder than anyother in the tour. Just keep that in mind, we want to see that art being crowned and only you can do that. You are the best, the greatest !!! 2010 is yours !!!!

Tiago from Brazil says:

December 14, 2009 at 12:36 pm

Incredible Parko, you showed us in a few words that you are a great professional surfer, a great person, a wonderful friend besides showing the whole word to be the best surfer of this season! That you have the best style in professional surf isn’t a surprise but this year you were the best and unfortunately a free surf session gave you a problem… A big problem that took out from you the focus you perhaps never had before….NO your fault, your injury was a serious one… But from this you got a great lesson, that’s the way for a 2010 world tittle. Mick is also a great person and an incredible surfer, but he also knows he didn’t show the world the best performance of this season…. Maybe 2 injuries gave him this title, the first one, obviously was yours, second one was Owen in Portugal! He wouldn’t be in that final….the young kid was on fire and most probably would beat him in that semifinal! Anyway, life is crazy, life is good and as you said, you are living the dream and are heat by heat fighting with one of your best friends the NUMBER 1! Incredible! What a great year for professional surf! What a great Hawaiian season…. Have a good rest and be sure: You were the best 2009′s surfer! All the best!

wow… Joel, just want to tell you that the amazing blend of precision and radical power of your surfing has been a great inspiration for me to watch. On any given day, you, Mick, Kelly, Andy, Dane, Bruce, and Jordy are interchangeable as the number one surfer in the world. I think the entire surfing world knows that, and I hope that you do too. Mick may have won the trophy, but this year Joel Parkinson won the respect of every surfer on the planet. We all hope you will keep it coming. Next year will be a show down between all of the above. Train even harder. You are plenty young. Shock everyone by coming straight back at them. Thanks again for not only inspiring us with your surfing talents, but for being a great example of human nobility and class. PS: I know it is an Aussie culture thang, but alcohol slows reflexes—steer clear.

Ash says:

December 15, 2009 at 11:04 am

As good as it comes…. I’m not talking about your surfing (which also is by the way). I was losing interest with the whole ASP world title thing… You and Mick brought back how it should be… I was a proud Australian when you went over the falls on that last wave and paddled back out to see Mick and even PROUDER to see you on the beach carrying him up with Deano. I take my hat off to as good a performance in and out of the water that I have ever seen, read or heard about in any sport. A true Champion. Congratulations Joel…
